Pakistan has called on the UN Decolonization Committee and the Security Council to take steps to end the Indian colonization of Jammu and Kashmir and allow the people of occupied Kashmir to exercise their right to self-determination.

Ambassador Munir Akram said that the Indian occupation of Jammu and Kashmir was the worst manifestation of modern colonialism.
He said that 80 former colonies have gained independence since 1946, but still the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine are among those who are deprived of the right to self-determination.
He said that all people have the right to self-determination, while in the case of Jammu and Kashmir this right is clear through the UN Security Council resolutions that the future state of the region must be decided.
He said that Kashmir is today the most densely occupied place in the world, 900,000 Indian soldiers are stationed in the disputed area, the entire Kashmiri leadership has been imprisoned, thousands of Kashmiri youth, including women and children, have been detained. Palaces and villages were destroyed as a “collective punishment”.
Ambassador Munir Akram said that India had shut down the Internet and did not allow independent observers to enter occupied Kashmir.
He recalled that the body of the famous Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani had been taken from his family and that his family had been deprived of the right to Islamic burial.
The Pakistani ambassador said that this was not only a measure of Indian oppression, but also the fear of a free voice from the Kashmiri people.
He said that since the illegal attempt to integrate Jammu and Kashmir, India’s aim was to change the population of the region by providing false address certificates.
Munir Akram stressed that this amounted to genocide and called on the Security Council to take measures so that the people of Kashmir could exercise their right to self-determination.
