UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his Thursday evening message to Muslims around the world on Ramzan’s evening that the Islamic tradition of hospitality and generosity is a remarkable lesson at a time when people in conflict zones and vulnerable populations are facing dire consequences .
Guterres said: “Of course this will be a completely different Ramazan. Many activities in the community will of course be affected by measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. In the meantime, many people in conflict areas will again be tragically marked by war and insecurity this month. I recently called for an immediate global ceasefire to focus on our common enemy – the virus. I repeat that appeal today, recalling the words of the Holy Quran ‘and if they incline to peace, then incline to it’.”
Guterres expressed his appreciation for governments and people across the Muslim world who live by their faith and support those who flee conflict in the best Islamic tradition of hospitality and generosity. This is a remarkable lesson in this world in which so many doors have been closed to those who even need protection from COVID-19.
“Once again, my best wishes to all for mercy, solidarity and compassion in these difficult times,” he said.
