Twitter removed a picture tweeted by President Donald Trump after the social media network received a copyright complaint from the New York Times.
Trump’s original tweet, released on June 30, showed a meme with Trump’s picture in the background. “In reality they’re not after me, they’re after you, I’m just in the way.”
The background image was taken by a New York Times photographer to accompany an article about the then presidential candidate Trump in September 2015.
Twitter now displays the message “This image was removed in response to a report by the copyright owner” instead of the tweet.
The move through the social media site is the newest instance of content posted or removed by Trump, including due to copyright complaints, violations of its violence threat policy, among others.
Twitter removed the image after receiving a complaint from the New York Times under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that held the rights to the photo. This is clear from a note in the lumen database.
The database collects and analyzes legal complaints and requests for removal of online materials.
Twitter started challenging Trump’s tweets in May and has clashed with him repeatedly since then. The president has threatened to change laws on social media after Twitter described one of his inaccurate postal voting tweets as inaccurate and hid a looting tweet that Twitter has fueled violence.
A campaign tribute video to George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis, was deactivated on their platforms last month due to copyright complaints from Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
