Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened to expel ambassadors from the United States, Germany and eight other Western countries after issuing a joint statement in support of the detained social leader.
According to the report, 64-year-old philanthropist and social leader Usman Kafala, who was born in Paris, has been in prison since 2017 without any conviction.
An extraordinary joint statement was issued by 10 Safra on Monday, which they widely shared on their Turkish social media accounts.
The statement said that the continued detention of Osman Kafala was having a “negative effect” on Turkey.
“I have told the foreign ministry that we can no longer host them in the country,” Erdogan told reporters.
Usman Kafala is accused of involvement in anti-government protests in 2013 and a failed military coup in 2016.
In a joint statement, the United States, Germany, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Sweden called for a speedy and just solution to the Kafala case.
The ambassadors were summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
On his return from a tour of Africa, Recep Tayyip Erdogan appeared to Turkey while talking to Turkish reporters.
According to Turkish private broadcaster NTV, the Turkish president said, “Is it your job to teach Turkey a lesson?” who are you?’
Following Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s statement, fears of a new wave of controversy from Turkey’s west led to a historic fall in the value of the Turkish lira against the dollar.
Usman Kafala, speaking from jail last week, said he felt Rajab Tayyab Ardawan was using him as a pawn to accuse the local opposition of foreign conspiracy against his two-decade rule.
“I think one of the reasons for the continued detention is that the government wants to keep alive the myth that the Ghazi protests in 2013 were part of an international conspiracy,” Kafala said in an interview.
“Because I am accused of being part of this alleged conspiracy by foreign powers, my release will weaken this myth and the government does not want it,” he said.
Usman Kafala was acquitted of the Ghazi protests in 2020 but was re-arrested before reaching home on charges of involvement in the 2016 military coup.
The European Council, the region’s top human rights watchdog, has issued a final warning to Turkey to comply with the 2019 European Court of Human Rights ruling on the stalled trial of Osman Kafala.
If Turkey fails to comply with the order, a meeting in Strasbourg from November 30 to December 2 could vote for disciplinary action against Ankara.
As a result of this action, Turkey’s right to vote and membership in the Council has been suspended.
