The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said he is ending US relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO) over handling COVID-19.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to eliminate the group’s American funding, which amounts to several hundred million dollars a year, he said when he performed in the White House rose garden.
WHO had failed to reform the organization the president had asked for in a letter to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director General, on May 18. This letter gave WHO 30 days to commit to reform, Donald Trump said
Trump said: “We detailed the reforms it needs to implement and dealt with them directly, but they refused to act.”
He added: “Because they have not implemented the required and much needed reforms, today we will end our relationship with the World Health Organization and pass these funds on to others around the world and earn urgent global public health needs.”
The World Health Organization is a United Nations specialized agency – an independent international organization that works with the United Nations. The WHO did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s decision.
A spokesman for the Secretary General of the United States, Antonio Guterres, said of Trump’s decision: “We have consistently asked all states to support the WHO.”
