MILTON KEYNES, England – A fleet of wheeled robots that make purchases in the English city of Milton Keynes has become increasingly popular as people are trapped inside due to the corona virus lockout. The robots, which grow to about an adult’s knee height and look like slick white plastic boxes on six black wheels, are a familiar sight in the area where they have been delivering food for more than two years.
After the government took strict social distance measures on March 23, the apps were busier than ever and distributed free of charge to the National Health Service (NHS) staff. Public demand rose. “We are now offering free delivery to all NHS employees in the region. In these very, very difficult times, we want to make life a little easier for these people, ”said Henry Harris-Burland of Starship, the company that makes the robots.
The robots have a kind of antenna, which is provided with a tiny red flag, so that they can be recognized more easily when rounding. These are large enough to carry several shopping bags and a bottle pack. In the past three weeks, Starship has doubled its fleet of delivery robots to 70 via Milton Keynes.
