Saudi Arabia announced plans to triple its sales tax (VAT) and stop monthly allowances for nationals under COVID-19, which triggered austerity measures while deepening oil production cuts to support falling prices.
The state’s media said the austerity measures would boost the treasury by 100 billion rials ($ 26.6 billion) as the petro-state struggles with a double blow to record low oil prices and an economic downturn caused by coronaviruses .
Finance minister Mohammed al-Jadaan said in a statement released by the official Saudi press agency: “It was decided to end the cost of living from June 2020 and to increase VAT from 5% to 15% from July 1st.”
Finance minister Jadaan stressed that measures are needed to support public finances in the face of a “sharp drop” in oil revenues as the COVID-19 pandemic slows global crude oil demand.
The government also canceled, extended or postponed spending by some government agencies and cut spending on projects launched as part of the ambitious Vision 2030 reform program to diversify the oil-dependent economy, the minister added.

وزیر خزانہ محمد الجادان نے سرکاری سعودی پریس ایجنسی کے جاری کردہ ایک بیان میں کہا ہے کہ “فیصلہ کیا گیا ہے کہ رہائشی الاؤنس کی لاگت کو جون 2020 سے روک دیا جائے گا اور یکم جولائی سے ٹیکس 5 فیصد سے بڑھا کر 15 فیصد کردیا جائے گا۔”
وزیر خزانہ جادان نے اس بات پر زور دیا کہ تیل کی آمدنی میں “تیزی سے کمی” کے دوران ریاستی مالیات کو بڑھانے کے لئے اقدامات ضروری تھے کیونکہ کوویڈ 19 وبائی امراض نے عالمی سطح پر خام تیل کی طلب کو بڑھا دیا ہے۔
