Russia’s first potential COVID-19 vaccine will receive local regulatory approval in the first half of August and will soon be given to frontline health workers.
A state-run research facility in Moscow – the Gamaleya Institute – has completed early human trials with the adenovirus-based vaccine this month and is expected to begin large-scale trials in August.
The vaccine will receive regulatory approval from the authorities in Russia as this large-scale trial continues. This underscores Moscow’s determination to be the first country in the world to approve a vaccine.
The speed with which Russia is introducing the vaccine has prompted some Western media to wonder if Moscow places national prestige before solid science and security.
“The (official) approval will be given in the first two weeks of August,” says the development source. “August 10th is the expected date, but it will definitely be before August 15. All (test) results so far have been very positive.”
