ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi held a video conference with Canada’s international development minister Karina Gould to discuss the general impact of the Covid 19 pandemic and the exchange of views on bilateral relations.
During the call, the Secretary of State appreciated the efforts of the Canadian government to deal with the pandemic and their support for Pakistan. He stressed the importance of continuous cooperation between the two countries.
Qureshi informed the Gould of Pakistan’s decisions to gradually open its economy to ensure the livelihoods of millions of people. He said government efforts are aimed at maintaining a delicate balance between saving lives by preventing the spread of Covid-19 and securing the livelihood of millions of people.

The two ministers also discussed debt relief efforts, particularly for developing countries. In this context, Foreign Minister Qureshi Gould informed Prime Minister Imran Khan’s call for a “global debt relief initiative”.
Qureshi recognized Canada’s support and, as an important member of the Group of Seven (G-7) in the industrialized nations and the G-20, asked Canada to continue to play an active role in guiding efforts to achieve a successful climax.
He added that this would help mobilize resources in the fight against the Covid 19 pandemic and support the economy. The Canadian minister said her country would play an active role in solving the problem.
The Secretary of State recognized Canada’s role and contribution in the development sector. He praised the joint initiative by Canada, Jamaica and the United Nations Secretary General for Development Finance (FFD), in which Prime Minister Imran Khan was invited to participate last week.
The Foreign Minister also informed Minister Gould of serious human rights violations and intensified military action in the Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ & K) areas occupied by India, as well as Indian steps to change the demographic structure of the occupied area.
He said the Indian government’s stance and demonetization of Muslim policies would undermine peace and stability in the region. The two ministers recognized the role of the Pakistani diaspora in bilateral relations, which were agreed to remain committed and to further strengthen that relationship.
