The Punjab government has approved the use of Actemra to treat critically ill Covid-19 patients after a sudden increase in the death rate reported by provincial public hospitals. The 400 mg injectable drug, an interleukin-6 inhibitor with the generic name tocilizumab, is prescribed to patients who have lung complications and abnormal levels of IL-6 in the blood. IL-6 is an endogenous chemical that causes inflammation.
According to the reports, “the price of each dose of the drug (injection) is Rs 60,000 and is administered twice to patients treated in an intensive care unit (ICU) in a life-threatening condition.” The decision was made at a meeting held on Wednesday by Punjab Health Minister Dr. Yasmin Rashid was called up. The health agency has allowed all teaching hospitals in Lahore to buy 20 doses of the drug.
Dr. Asad Aslam Khan, the managing director of the Mayo Hospital in Lahore, presented a study on the use of the drug in critical care patients in intensive care units. He told the meeting that his hospital reported an 80-90 percent recovery rate after doctors prescribed this drug to critical patients of Covid-19 who were brought there with lung damage and severe pneumonia.
He said one patient was an associate professor of medicine at the Govt Shahdara Teaching Hospital in Lahore, and another was a personal staff officer for the Vice Chancellor at King Edward Medical University. Both were treated at the Mayo Hospital and the drug’s performance was promising in that they not only recovered but also left the intensive care unit. Vice Chancellors of medical universities, heads of medical schools, members of the government’s Corona Expert Advisory Group (CEAG), leading pulmonologists and medical professors attended the meeting.

لاہور کے میو اسپتال کے منیجنگ ڈائریکٹر ڈاکٹر اسد اسلم خان نے انتہائی نگہداشت والے یونٹوں میں انتہائی نگہداشت مریضوں میں ڈرگ کے استعمال سے متعلق ایک مطالعہ پیش کیا۔ انہوں نے اجلاس کو بتایا کہ ڈاکٹروں نے کوویڈ 19 کے اہم مریضوں کو یہ دوائی تجویز کرنے کے بعد ان کے اسپتال میں 80 سے 90 فیصد بحالی کی شرح کی اطلاع دی ہے ، جو پھیپھڑوں کے نقصان اور شدید نمونیا کے ساتھ وہاں لائے گئے تھے۔
انہوں نے بتایا کہ ایک مریض لاہور کے گورنمنٹ شاہدرہ ٹیچنگ اسپتال میں میڈیسن کا ایسوسی ایٹ پروفیسر تھا ، اور دوسرا کنگ ایڈورڈ میڈیکل یونیورسٹی میں وائس چانسلر کے ذاتی اسٹاف آفیسر تھا۔ دونوں کا میو اسپتال میں علاج کرایا گیا تھا اور اس دوا کی کارکردگی میں یہ وعدہ کیا گیا تھا کہ وہ نہ صرف صحت یاب ہوئیں بلکہ انتہائی نگہداشت کا یونٹ چھوڑ کر چلے گئے۔ میڈیکل یونیورسٹیوں کے وائس چانسلرز ، میڈیکل اسکولوں کے سربراہان ، حکومت کے کورونا ایکسپرٹ ایڈوائزری گروپ (سی ای اے جی) کے ممبران ، معروف پلمونولوجسٹ اور میڈیکل پروفیسرز نے اس میٹنگ میں شرکت کی۔
