Pakistani ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Munir Akram, called on Wednesday for the organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to set up a working group on India’s anti-Muslim policy and informed the representatives of the Muslim countries about anti-Muslim acts the Indian state.
He said: “India is working on an anti-Muslim policy in an organized manner,” adding that they wanted to wipe out Muslim identity when they targeted the community under the guise of a coronavirus pandemic.
Ambassador said India is working to change the demographics of Muslims in the country. He urged Islamic countries to play their part in slowing the Indian state’s anti-Muslim policies.
The majority of OIC member states who were informed of the matter supported the idea of setting up a working group to combat anti-Muslim policies in India.
Previously, Pakistan praised the rejection of a new residence law by the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which was introduced in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ & K).
State Department spokeswoman Aisha Farooqui said in a tweet: “Pakistan welcomes the OIC statement that condemns and rejects illegal actions by the Indian government to redefine residence rules to change IOJ&K demographics, 4th Geneva Convention, [and] international humanitarian laws. “
The controversial law, which was announced in New Delhi on Monday, prescribes the procedure for issuing a residence certificate, which is a mandatory requirement for finding employment in the region.
Critics, including Pakistan, say that it is a continuation of India’s decision to end the region’s semi-autonomous status in August last year and is paving the way for foreigners to settle in the disputed area.
Under the new law, eligible non-residents can apply for the certificate along with people who have lived in occupied Kashmir for 15 years or who have studied there for seven years and who have appeared in 10th or 12th grade exams at a local school.
