MILAN – Microsoft Corp. announced on Friday that it will launch the first data center area in Italy as part of an $ 1.5 billion investment program as the U.S. company expands cloud storage services to other locations worldwide. Microsoft’s competitor, Amazon Web Services, opened a data center region in Milan last week, while Google Inc. signed a contract in March with Telecom Italia’s former telephone monopoly to increase cloud operations in Italy.
Analysts expect the Italian cloud market to grow at double-digit rates over the next few years, as companies that introduced intelligent work during the coronavirus crisis are increasingly relying on digital processes. Jean-Philippe Courtois, head of global sales, marketing, and operations at Microsoft, said the company recognized the tremendous potential to drive innovation in cloud services.
The new datacenter region will be located in the area of Milan and will join the other 60 regions announced globally by Microsoft.
Microsoft will also have access to local cloud infrastructure in Italy as part of a five-year strategy, launching digital skills and smart work and artificial intelligence initiatives for small and medium businesses. The company will also expand its technology collaboration with state-controlled postal operator Poste Italiane to further accelerate the company’s digital transformation.
