India has sent thousands more paramilitary personnel to occupied Jammu and Kashmir, one of the most militarized zones in the world, due to the rising incidence of targeted killings in recent weeks.
According to the foreign news agency AFP, New Delhi has deployed at least 500,000 troops in the occupied valley for decades.
A spokesman for the Paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Abhiram Pankaj, said, “About 2,500 personnel have arrived and have been deployed across the Kashmir Valley, with more to come.”
A total of about 5,000 additional paramilitary personnel are being deployed this week, the police officer said.
A portion of the staff is housed in civilian community halls, reinforced with new mud bag bunkers, reminiscent of the early 1990s, when resistance to Indian rule was at its height.
Twelve people have been killed in targeted operations in the occupied valley over the past month, including police officers, migrant workers from the northern states of India and local leaders of the Sikh and Hindu communities.
Some of those killed were accused by local resistance groups of being employees of Indian forces.
Police and paramilitary forces, armed with bulletproof gear and automatic rifles, have stepped up searches of residents, including children, on the streets since the incidents.
Newly deployed Indian troops are now seen around several new outposts set up in Srinagar in recent weeks.
