In its annual report published last day, the US Commission for International Religious Freedom declared India to be the “top violation of religious freedom“. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which was passed by parliament in December in the majority of Hindu Indian Hindus, violates religious freedom, especially for Muslims in the country.
The rating was published in the panel’s annual report, which oversees religious freedom overseas and the response of the United States government.
The controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is a quick route to citizenship that excludes Muslims. There are Hindus and religious minorities from neighboring countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The US Commission recommended that the US State Department designate India as a “country of special importance” (CPC) because it “tolerated particularly serious violations of religious freedom”.
USCIRF vice-president Nadine Maenza said: “It has shown that the Indian central government is involved in the suppression of religious freedom, and of course millions of Muslims can be in detention, deportation and statelessness if the government does its proposed national register of Citizens “
The 104-page report recorded progress and failures in religious freedom in 29 countries in 2019.
