Nation remembers the folk singer Ustad Baray Ghulam Ali Khan on the 52nd anniversary of his death on Thursday (today).
In 1902 the legend was born in Kasur. Baray Ghulam Ali Khan was familiar with almost all forms of subcontinental vocal music; Khayal, Tarana, Thumri, Dadra and Kafi. He also sang Punjabi, Kashmiri, Sindhi, Purabi, Bengali and even Nepalese folk songs with the same self-confidence. After independence, he left Bombay and settled in Karachi.
Baray Ghulam Ali Khan was a master of Khayal singing, as Patiala Gharana refined it by Punjabi musicians who dominated the entire subcontinental melody scene.
Filmmaker K. Asif asked Baray Ghulam Ali Khan to voice his voice for some of the cult classic Mughal-e-Azam (1960) with Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. After a long persuasion, Ustad sang two songs for the film – “Prem Jogan Ban Ke” and “Shubh Din Aayo”.
However, it was very expensive – an extreme price of Rs. 25,000 per song. For comparison: Traditional playback singers like Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar received 500 rupees per song at that time.
He has been widely recognized as the greatest classical singer on the subcontinent. He died on April 23, 1968 in Hyderabad Deccan after an extended illness that had paralyzed him in recent years.

جمعرات (آج) کو قوم نے گلوکار استاد بڑے غلام علی خان کی وفات کی 52 ویں برسی کے موقع پر انہیں یاد کیا۔
یہ لیجنڈ قصور میں پیدا ہوا۔ بڑے غلام علی خان برصغیر کے ہر طرح کے صوتی موسیقی سے واقف تھے۔ خیال ، ترانہ ، تھمری ، دادرا اور کیفی۔ انہوں نے اسی اعتماد کے ساتھ پنجابی ، کشمیری ، سندھی ، پورابی ، بنگالی اور یہاں تک کہ نیپالی لوک بھی گائے۔ آزادی کے بعد ، انہوں نے بمبئی چھوڑ کر کراچی میں سکونت اختیار کرلی۔
بڑے غلام علی خان خیال گائیکی کے ماہر تھے ، کیوں کہ پٹیالہ گھرانہ نے اس کو پنجابی موسیقاروں میں بہتر کیا ہے جو پورے برصغیر کے میلوڈی منظر پر غلبہ رکھتے ہیں۔
فلمساز کے آصف نے بڑے غلام علی خان سے دلیپ کمار اور مدھوبالا کے ساتھ مل کر کچھ فرقوں کے کلاسک مغل اعظم (1960) کے لئے اپنی آواز اٹھانے کو کہا۔ طویل قائل کرنے کے بعد ، استاد نے فلم کے لئے دو گانے گائے – “پریم جوگان بان کی” اور “شبھ دین آیو”۔
انہیں برصغیر کے سب سے بڑے کلاسیکی گلوکار کے طور پر بڑے پیمانے پر پہچانا جاتا ہے۔ طویل بیماری کے بعد آخری سالوں میں انھیں فالج ہونے کی وجہ سے 23 اپریل 1968 کو حیدرآباد دکن میں دفن کیا گیا۔
