The government has imposed a tax of 75 paisas on mobile phone calls that last longer than five minutes.
During the speech on the 2021-2022 draft budget, Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen said there will be no tax on internet and text messaging, but a tax of 75 paisas will be levied on mobile phone calls longer than five minutes. He added that IT companies are not taxed.
Telecommunications taxes have been a controversial issue for the government since the budget was announced two weeks ago. The government had originally announced that in order to generate adequate income from this sector, federal tax on mobile phone calls of more than three minutes at Rs. 1 per call, text messaging at Rs. 0.1 per text message, and internet data usage at Rs. 5 per GB are suggested.
However, after facing severe criticism, Energy Minister Hammad Azhar said last week that Prime Minister Imran Khan and the Cabinet “did not approve” the federal excise tax on Internet data. He assured that the duty will not be included in the final draft finance law that will be submitted to parliament for approval.
The latest update, however, according to Minister Tarin’s speech today, is that there will be a tax of 75 paisas for mobile phone calls that exceed five minutes.
