Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had a phone call on Friday with the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, to inform him of the deteriorating situation in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK).
At the beginning, the Secretary General expressed his condolences to the crash of the PIA 8303 flight and the tragic loss of life. The Foreign Minister thanked for the condolences and added that the situation regarding possible victims has developed further.
Regarding the situation at the IOJK, he expressed Pakistan’s deep concern about serious human rights violations and intensification of military repression, as well as measures to change the demographic structure of the occupied valley.
In this context, according to the State Department’s press release (MOFA), Shah Mehmood Qureshi alluded to the recent IOJ & K residence law, which violated relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and international law, including the 4th Geneva Convention.
The Foreign Minister regretted that India, in the guise of the COVID-19 crisis, closed the occupied territory even more severely and that the Kashmiri population suffered from fake “encounters” and false searches, extrajudicial killings and other further brutalized repressive measures.
He stressed that, to divert the world’s attention from its internal problems, continued repression by occupying forces in IOJK, the increasing tide of hatred, racism and Islamophobia against the Muslim minority may resort to a false flag operation and this will undertake another mishap.
Pakistan had warned the world community in this regard and would act effectively to prevent such a rash move.
FM Qureshi reiterated that Pakistan was ready to allow the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to authenticate the allegation regarding the so-called specific information.
The Indian allegations were primarily intended to defame the resistance of the indigenous Kashmiris, which was a direct result of the oppression and brutalization of Kashmiris by India. The warlike statements by the Indian political and military establishment posed a threat to peace and security in the region, said Qureshi.
The Secretary of State drew the Secretary General’s attention to the tightening of ceasefire violations by India along the control line (LoC) and stressed the important role of UNMOGIP in fully reporting all ceasefire violations.
While stressing his recent communication to the United Nations Security Council regarding the IOJK, Qureshi emphasized that both the United Nations and the Security Council should play their role in preventing the situation from escalating and in India’s illegal actions continues and peace and peace maintains security in South Asia. He also expressed concern about the current demonization of Muslims in India related to Covid-19.
Secretary-General Guterres thanked the Foreign Minister for this timely update and comprehensive information on the situation in IOJK.
Regarding Prime Minister Imran Khan’s “Global Debt Relief Initiative” for developing countries, FM Qureshi emphasized that debt relief is essentially an instrument to revive the global economy. The Prime Minister outlined Pakistan’s perspective in a virtual address to the WEF’s COVID platform.
He assessed it as supporting Pakistan in the Secretary General’s efforts to address the long-term funding problems of developing countries.
The Secretary General informed the Secretary of State that his office is organizing a high-level virtual event to finance development next week with Canada and Jamaica.
He expressed hope that Pakistan could attend the event at the prime ministerial level. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi thanked the UN chief for the invitation.
