The non-profit and non-governmental organization Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) conducted a survey and found that at least 26% of the women were fired from their jobs while the coronavirus was blocked.
FAFEN published a press release on Labor Day on the unemployment of its employers’ workers, especially women, during the ongoing blockade after a coronavirus pandemic.
A survey of working women said that 26% of the 904 respondents were fired from their jobs after the government announced the ban.
Of the workers who lost their jobs, 14% were made redundant while the remaining 12% were temporarily suspended. Factory workers had the highest rate among those whose jobs were lost. 15% of the women who stated that they had finished their work came from Sindh respondents and 3% from Baluchistan.
The survey was conducted in eight districts of the country between April 15 and 30, including Faisalabad, Haripur, Lahore, Sialkot, Peshawar, Rahimyar Khan, Quetta and Karachi. Respondents included factory workers, salespeople and employees from private schools, hospitals and other commercial establishments.
Among the women surveyed, 7% worked daily, 85% worked monthly and the rest were paid every two months or weekly.
A majority of the dismissed workers (up to 51%) were waiting for their contributions to be released by their employers, and late payment of the contributions could further exacerbate the economic hardship of the dismissed workers.
Of the women who lost their jobs, more than three quarters, up to 78%, did not know whether they were registered with a social security organization, while 13% said they were registered with the institution’s pension fund (EOBI) . One percent of women said they attended the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), and only 28 percent of working women said they could apply for support under the Federal Emergency Cash Program.
