Chancellor Angela Merkel said the EU should assume more global responsibility in the COVID 19 crisis, especially since relations with the United States are currently “difficult”.

Merkel welcomed the European Commission proposed € 750 billion COVID-19 recovery fund for the bloc, but said more should be done to help other countries.
Merkel told the Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s think tank via video link: “Especially in times of crisis, I want the European Union to show solidarity and take on more responsibility at a global level.”
“The pandemic will exacerbate existing conflicts and problems in many places and thus become a stress test for the European Union.”
Merkel said: “Of course I am aware that working with America is currently more difficult than we would like.”
