Top Red Cross officials say economic sanctions are putting Afghanistan in crisis, calling the situation “outrageous.”
In a statement issued after a six-day visit to Afghanistan, Dominic Stilthart, director of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), said: “I am appalled by this situation.
“We saw pictures of children leaning like bones, which is scary,” he said.
“When you stand in the pediatric ward of a major hospital in Kandahar, you see the empty eyes of hungry children and the sad faces of parents. These conditions are outrageous,” he said.

Stallheart pointed out that teachers and health department staff, including municipal employees, had not been paid for months.
“They have no money to buy groceries, their children are hungry and dangerously thin and dying,” he said.
Taliban officials say they are starting to pay salaries to government employees, but it will take time.
But Still Heart warned that the situation was deteriorating due to growing malnutrition.
“This is the worst food crisis before the onset of the worst winter,” he said.
The ICRC warns that there is a growing need for assistance from humanitarian organizations as many countries and banks fear violations of UN Security Council resolutions.
Stillhardt said the ICRC called on non-partisan humanitarian organizations to work together.
He said the ICRC itself was taking steps to help Afghanistan, adding that “it is in everyone’s interest to start humanitarian activities and run Afghanistan smoothly.”
Still Heart said the organization, among other needs, has begun cooperating with 18 regional and provincial hospitals, which will cover all costs, including medical equipment for the next six months.
