The leading British Sikh group, the Sikh Federation, has accused its conservative colleague Lord Rami Ranger of working for the interests of the Indian government led by the Hindutva Bhartiya Janata party at the expense of the rights of the Sikhs and their legitimate demands.
The Sikh Federation intervened after a dispute broke out on social media between the first female Sikh MP and Shadow International Development Minister Preet Kaul Gill MP and Lord Raminder Ranger of the Conservative Party.
In a tweet, Rami Ranger claimed that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson did not support Khalistan.
He wrote: “Today I spoke to the UK Prime Minister, MP for Rt Hon Boris Johnson, who has categorically assured me that the UK government does not support the Khalistan Movement. Thank you Prime Minister.”
In response to his allegation, Labor MP Preet Kaul Gill wrote that “the principle of self-determination is prominently anchored in Article I of the Charter of the United Nations” in response to the Sikhs’ demands for a homeland of their own, Khalistan.
Birmingham MP Edgbaston added: “It is the first right in the two human rights treaties (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights [ICCPR] and [ICESCR]).”
