The federal cabinet has formed a two-member ministerial committee to address the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) concerns over the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the 2023 general elections.
According to the report, ignoring the public’s frustration over the sharp rise in prices in the country, the cabinet expressed satisfaction with its view that the economy is on a “rising trend”.
The meeting was informed that the government has repaid the foreign debt of 12.27 billion this year and 12 12.5 billion next year.
The Cabinet was also informed that this year the country has witnessed record production of cotton, rice and other crops while the auto industry has also witnessed record production.
Giving a news briefing after the meeting, Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry said that the Cabinet has given the task to Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz and Minister for Information Technology Syed Aminul Haq to meet the Chief Election Commissioner on Wednesday.
The purpose of the meeting is to assure all possible cooperation from the government in conducting the local body elections in Islamabad through EVM.
He urged the Election Commission to issue tenders for the purchase of EVMs so that the next general elections could be held through machines.
A cabinet member also told that Aminul Haq, Shibli Faraz and Railway Minister Azam Swati had met the Election Commission to work out a strategy to facilitate elections through EVMs.
However, it was decided that the two ministers would meet Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja today (Wednesday).
وفاقی کابینہ نے 2023 کے عام انتخابات میں الیکٹرانک ووٹنگ مشینوں (ای وی ایم) کے استعمال پر الیکشن کمیشن آف پاکستان (ای سی پی) کے تحفظات کو دور کرنے کے لیے دو رکنی وزارتی کمیٹی تشکیل دی ہے۔
رپورٹ کے مطابق، ملک میں قیمتوں میں ہوشربا اضافے پر عوام کی مایوسی کو نظر انداز کرتے ہوئے، کابینہ نے اپنے اس خیال پر اطمینان کا اظہار کیا کہ معیشت “بڑھتے ہوئے رجحان” پر ہے۔
اجلاس کو بتایا گیا کہ حکومت نے رواں سال 12 ارب 27 کروڑ اور آئندہ سال 12 ارب 50 کروڑ ڈالر کا غیر ملکی قرضہ واپس کر دیا ہے۔
کابینہ کو یہ بھی بتایا گیا کہ اس سال ملک میں کپاس، چاول اور دیگر فصلوں کی ریکارڈ پیداوار ہوئی ہے جبکہ آٹو انڈسٹری میں بھی ریکارڈ پیداوار ہوئی ہے۔
اجلاس کے بعد نیوز بریفنگ دیتے ہوئے وفاقی وزیر اطلاعات فواد چوہدری نے کہا کہ کابینہ نے وزیر سائنس اینڈ ٹیکنالوجی شبلی فراز اور وزیر انفارمیشن ٹیکنالوجی سید امین الحق کو بدھ کو چیف الیکشن کمشنر سے ملاقات کا ٹاسک دیا ہے۔
ملاقات کا مقصد اسلام آباد میں بلدیاتی انتخابات ای وی ایم کے ذریعے کرانے میں حکومت کی جانب سے ہر ممکن تعاون کی یقین دہانی کرانا ہے۔
انہوں نے الیکشن کمیشن پر زور دیا کہ وہ ای وی ایم کی خریداری کے لیے ٹینڈر جاری کرے تاکہ اگلے عام انتخابات مشینوں کے ذریعے کرائے جا سکیں۔
تاہم یہ فیصلہ کیا گیا کہ دونوں وزراء آج (بدھ کو) چیف الیکشن کمشنر سکندر سلطان راجہ سے ملاقات کریں گے۔
