The Indian section of Amnesty International demanded the release of Safoora Zargar, a pregnant activist who was arrested for community violence that broke out in Delhi in February under the country’s controversial Citizenship Change Act (CAA).
The human rights organization beat up the Indian government in a tweet for “ruthlessly arresting a pregnant woman and sending her to a crowded prison during Covid-19”. She asked for her immediate release.
According to a report by Al Jazeera, 27-year-old Safoora Zargar was arrested on April 10 and charged under the country’s 2019 Illegal Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). At the time of her arrest, she was three months pregnant.
Safoora Zargar was a research associate at Jamia Millia University in Delhi and media coordinator of the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC), which organized protests for weeks against the citizenship law passed by the government in December last year.
According to a * Times of India * report, Zargar is currently spending Ramadan fasting in Tihar prison. Delhi police say Zargar is being held in a separate cell in Tihar Prison and has received medical surveillance and facilities.
They accused Zargar of being a “key conspirator” to the local violence that broke out in Delhi in February. At least 56 people were killed in clashes between Hindus and Muslims in the country’s capital.
