Airbus’ 11-person investigation team reached Pakistan from France on Tuesday to launch an investigation into the plane crash last week that killed 97 people when an Airbus A-320 from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) hit a crowded neighborhood in landed near the Karachi airport.
The exploratory team inspected the runway at Jinnah International Airport. They also visited the air traffic control tower and the radar control station.
Airbus experts and engineers also visited the PK-8303 crash site, where they were informed by Aircraft Accident Investigation Board officials, Radio Pakistan reported.
“We offer every possible support to Airbus technical experts,” said Abdul Hafeez, a spokesman for PIA.
Airbus experts are expected to take the aircraft’s black box recorder, which contains the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, as well as any other evidence that would be helpful in the investigation.
The team will fly back to France this evening after 16 hours of investigation at 10pm.
Only two people on board survived the crash, including Zafar Masood, a bank director.
The flight took off from Lahore and crashed on Friday when it tried to land at Jinnah International Airport. The plane tried unsuccessfully to land at Karachi airport before the crash. Authorities found the plane’s black box and kept the crash site to facilitate the investigation.
Eighteen houses were damaged on the ground, but no one was killed, mainly because officials were gathered in nearby mosques at the time, officials said. Eight people on the ground were injured.
So far, authorities have given 41 families to their families, Hafeez said, adding that DNA testing is ongoing to identify the remains of the other victims.
The national airline issued international and national tickets to the survivors.
According to the spokesman for the national airline, the bodies of the victims are being taken to their homes on special instructions from the Prime Minister. Four bodies were delivered to Lahore and three to Islamabad.
