The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has filed a complaint with the Federal Investigation Agency against American blogger Cynthia D Ritchie for “hateful comments and defamations” on Twitter against former Prime Minister and Party leader Benazir Bhutto.
Islamabad PPP district attorney Shakeel Abbasi filed Thursday’s request against Ritchie to post “very derogatory and defamatory comments” on Twitter about the married life of Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari, and asked the agency to oppose Ritchie to proceed.
In the letter dated May 28, 2020, the blogger’s statements were described as “extremely derogatory and defamatory”.
Ritchie commented on a tweet about the recent violent confrontation between model Uzma Khan and a woman named Amna Usman, who accused the model of having a relationship with her husband, and used this claim to justify her violent treatment of the model.
According to the request, Ritchie’s comments “have caused immense pain and anguish to the millions of people who worship Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and who show their greatest respect.”
Ritchie’s tweet sparked a strong backlash from PPP leaders and supporters. Sherry Rehman said: “A martyr prime minister attributes such filth to an advocate of women’s rights and humiliates the writer of this bot handle more than anything.”
“Your office is asked to take immediate action and initiate proceedings against this woman, as required by law and under your mandate. A photocopy of the tweet, a true representation of her sick and disgusting spirit, is attached to the application, ”Abbasi said in his letter.
A member of the FIA cyber crime wing confirmed the development to the media and said that the request will be forwarded to the appropriate officials for further processing.
