Waheed Murad, the legendary actor of Pakistani films and known as the chocolate hero, passed away 38 years ago.
City-wide hero Waheed Murad opened his eyes on October 2, 1938 at the house of filmmaker Nisar Murad. Waheed Murad, who has an MA in English Literature from Karachi University, started his career with the 1962 film Olad.
Waheed Murad’s first film as a hero was “Heera or Pathar”. The 75-week-long film “Arman” on the silver screen took Waheed Murad to new heights and he was called the first regular superstar of the Pakistani film industry. He was the only hero in the subcontinent after Dilip Kumar whose hair style and costumes were imitated.
At one time, actor Waheed Murad set a record of success during filmmaking with director Pervez Malik, lyricist Masroor Anwar, musician Sohail Rana and singer Ahmed Rushdie. Film critics say that Waheed Murad was not an individual but an institution.
Chocolate hero Waheed Murad has acted in 124 films including Doraha, Andalib, Jab Jab Phool Khale, Salgara, Anjuman, Jahan Tum Wahan Hum, Phool Mere Gulshan Ka and Dewar Bhabhi. The rise and fall of Waheed Murad’s film is likened to that of Hollywood actor Elvis Presley. Who saw a sudden decline after a long fame.
One of the special things about Waheed Murad that sets him apart from other actors is that even after three decades of his demise, he is still in the hearts and minds of his fans.
On November 23, 1983, Waheed Murad Dar Fani, a pioneer in the Pakistani film industry, passed away. He has been awarded Sitara-e-Imtiaz, Nigar, Graduate, National, Painter and other awards for his artistic services.
