Federal Finance and Revenue Minister Shaukat Tareen has announced that the release price of wheat has been fixed at Rs. 1,950 per 40 kg consumer helps in reducing the price of wheat flour in the market.
While speaking at a press conference on rising inflation and public debt on Wednesday, the minister clarified that the release should be priced in Rs. 1,475 per 40 kg was not cheap for the government as it came at the cost of huge subsidy. Mr Tareen said that the government has increased the support price to Rs 100,000. As a hedge against a fall in domestic production of 1,800 wheat. He stressed that the government intends to provide targeted subsidies on wheat flour, sugar, ghee and pulses to 40 per cent of the population to “increase income and affordability” at the best possible level.
He said the funds for the targeted subsidy would be routed through the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP). A BISP official said that a proposal to provide additional cash to about 55 lakh people is being considered.
On the occasion, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Food Security Jamshed Iqbal Cheema said that Prime Minister Imran Khan had agreed to increase the subsidy on wheat flour and increase the release price by more than 32%. He further said that the decision to fix the new release price of wheat was taken in a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister last week and representatives of the respective provincial governments also attended the meeting.
According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the average purchase price of a 20 kg bag of wheat flour is Rs. 1,220 represents a 20% annual growth in less than 12 months.
The finance minister argued that limited efforts were being made at the provincial level to control prices. “The previous government did not change the support price of wheat. 1250 per 40 kg and as a result there was no increase in crop production during the last five years,” he said.
Separately, the finance minister explained that the public debt had increased manifold due to limited economic growth, IMF policies and the pandemic. At the moment, Tareen remarked, Pakistan’s debt is in Rs. 25 trillion in 2018 as against Rs. 39.9 trillion. He said that with Rs 1.5 lakh crore in a year, Rs 2.9 lakh crore has badly affected the public debt.
