US Special Representative for Afghan reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, reached Islamabad on Friday and held talks with Army Chief of Staff (COAS), Qamar Javed Bajwa, and other officials to overcome the current standoff in the Afghan peace process.
He reached Pakistan after meeting with the Afghan Taliban political leader, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, in Doha and
It was his second visit in less than a month and was held steadily in the fragile peace process.
At the Rawalpindi headquarters, Khalilzad met Gen Qamar to discuss progress in the Afghan peace process.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement, “issues of mutual interest and the general regional security situation, including the Afghan reconciliation process, were discussed. The COAS affirmed that our support for the peace process is an expression of our goodwill for the cause. “
The statement added that “Khalilzad praised Pakistan’s continued efforts for peace and stability in the region.”
The State Department had previously said in a statement shortly before its trip: “At every stop, Zalmay Khalilzad will call for support for an immediate reduction in violence, an accelerated schedule for the start of intra-Afghan negotiations, and cooperation between all parties to combat Covid-19 Pandemic in Afghanistan. ”
Khalilzad met Baradar in Doha on Thursday and, according to the Taliban spokesman, “The meeting discussed the immediate release of prisoners, the start of the inter-Afghan peace talks, and the full implementation of the agreement [between the Taliban and the United States].”
