WASHINGTON – Astronomers have found the next ever black hole in the world and are shocked by its living conditions – harmonious with two stars in a spectacular heavenly union that could end in a bitter split. In a so-called triple system, the black hole, at least 4.2 times the solar mass, is bound to two stars that are about 1,000 light years away from Earth, researchers said on Wednesday.
“Just around the corner,” in heavenly words, said astronomer Thomas Rivinius, lead author of the study published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, to Chile’s European Southern Observatory. A light year is the distance light that moves over 9.5 trillion kilometers in one year.
Black holes are incredibly dense objects with such strong gravitational forces that not even light can escape. Others are gigantic like the 26,000 light years from Earth at the core of our galaxy, which is four million times the mass of the Sun. Garden types, so-called star mass black holes, have the mass of a single star like the newly discovered one. It probably began life as a star twenty times the mass of the sun, which collapsed into a black hole at the end of its relatively short life.
This triple system called HR 6819 can be seen with the naked eye in the telescope constellation from the southern hemisphere. The next known black hole has been one, maybe three times further away. Since then, only a few hundred star-mass black holes have been identified. In the Milky Way, however, there could be hundreds of millions or even a billion, said astrophysicist and co-author Petr Hadrava from the Czech Academy of Sciences. This black hole, which was found with a Chilean observatory, is aware of its manners and has not destroyed its two partners: stars that are about five or six times the size of the Sun’s mass. The black hole becomes a pair of two planets that are as similar as the planet of the sun. The other star is further away and orbits the pair. This star turns so fast that it is misconfigured and bulges out at the equator. The two stars are far enough from the black hole that they don’t pull any material out of them. However, it is predicted that the closer star will grow in size over the course of its life cycle within a few million years.
“Otherwise it is unclear what will happen,” said Rivinius. “If the black hole ends with the star in it, the most impressive result will be.”
